Introduction
This course is designed for non-native Chinese speakers and is suitable for complete beginners and elementary level students. The primary aim is to develop basic communication skills, focusing on listening and speaking. However, reading and writing basic Chinese characters will also be taught.
The programme includes pronunciation, basic vocabulary and basic grammar. Class participation is a fundamental element of this course and is required of all students.
Objectives and Expectations
- By the end of this course a student should:
- • be able to communicate in Chinese using basic dialogue.
- • be able to give simple oral presentations using correct pronunciation and expressions.
- • have rudimentary knowledge of grammar and be able to read some basic characters and words.
- • have a developing understanding of contemporary Chinese culture and be able to apply their language skills aptly and appropriately.
Content
- Language Skills:
- • Pronunciation: 21 initials, 38 finals, four tones
- • Grammar: grades 1 and 2 (30 grammatical points)
- • Vocabulary: grade 1 (300 words)
- • Character Recognition: grade 1 (100 characters)
Topics include: Greetings, introductions, apologizing, asking for directions, shopping, expression of gratitude, making appointments, and more.
Course Duration and Class Size
Two ten-week courses will be run each year. Two sessions (one and half hours each) take place per week. In addition, students are expected to study and practise outside the classroom in their own time.
Class sizes will be limited to approximately fifteen students per course.
